I wake up wrapped inside my mother's arms in her bed

Our eyes slowly blinked open almost in unison

Straight ahead of me I can see the dark rain clouds

Calgary in late November rarely sees the sun

I feel soft lips touch the center of my forehead,

I look up to see the most beautiful, loving human being

Without leaving her arms,

she gets out of bed

carries me downstairs

And sits me on the brown carpet in the living room

I stare at the retro red walls

that sit behind the TV

Which plays my favorite program The Wiggles

I hear a pan clank in the kitchen

I turn my head as golden pigtails fly around my face

My mom had set up everything in the kitchen to make cookies

She gives me that comforting, warm smile

She reaches her hand out

THE EDGE OF THE WORLD

If you chose to go,

it should be on a foggy mystic Monday evening.

First, you drive over the windy highway

Feeling your ears pop over the curve  before the bridge

You holler and honk through the forever ongoing tunnel.

Then you see a gathering of light grey mountains,

with a road that guides you through them

Drive to the end of it.

If you see a coyote, don’t stop to look at it

they are dying,

another car hit one last week.

The road is smooth and newly paved.

When you reach the end of the road,

there is a beach

With a sea cliff beside it.

Walk up the soft eroded trails and be careful,

it's slippery.

As you reach the top, you walk on a narrow quiet path

That hugs the edge of the mountain,

crumbling off into the ocean with each step

You pass under luscious Cyprus Trees,

and as you leave them,

you have made it.

A level, flat area above the ocean

With a view of each point

And the snowy-peaked rocks in the ocean.

In the middle of this area is a maze

That takes about a minute to walk through.

In the middle is a series of little gifts,

Initially for the girl who fell.

But overtime became a tourism geocache

But if you uncover the layers of shenanigans

You may find some stones,

With beautiful words on them.

In life, we loved you dearly,

In death, we love you still

In our hearts you hold a place

No one else will ever fill

BURNING EMBERS

A log small and dry

Each end being covered by flame

As the color turns from brown

To black to white

It falls

To the ground and a shower

of white ash floats up

Towards the chimney crown

The coal is a bright orange

The crackling sounds get quieter

And the light in the wood darkens
