MY STORY

HI!!! My name is Kylie Horstmeyer and I am a Senior at Redwood. I am currently the captain of the Redwood Girls Varsity basketball team and I am committed to play next year at the University of San Diego. While I’m not playing basketball, I enjoy going backpacking, watching the sunset with my friends and traveling. Although this is my first year studying and writing poetry I have really enjoyed writing about things I love, like nature and memories with my family. At school, I also am a reporter for the Redwood Bark, the sports anchor for Redwood TV, and I am the senior class Vice President. I also have a dog named Cowboy! He is a Border Collie mix and my best friend.

PORTFOLIO OF WORK

I AM ME

Nothing worse, nothing better, me

Sometimes I hear the laughs of my family and friends

The only person who hears me,

Is myself

Where a conversation between owls is upstairs

Not out in the open

I see the spaceship leaving me

Waving goodbye

A voice

I hear

A piece of life

looks like it should flourish but holding back

I see

A brave creature, the color of the grass, below

I am a swim through the universe

Where Sometimes I see a tall, brave, stubborn girl

Where other times I see someone who needs direction

A stepping stone or most of the time, just a hug

As I stroke through the oxygenless air

I see a lady

She’s sitting under a bright orange tree

Her eyes beam at me like a sorcerer

But she has an innocent smile

I am confusion

Or am I anxiety

I see a star that’s as bright as the sun

I hear a soft brave voice tell me to sit

I look down and see a round ball of blue and green

I see negativity as well as a bird perched on a cross

a voice  murmurs in my ear

As I look down at the planet, I see a girl

She looks like me

I see fearless but I know she's anxiety

HAPPY

It’s my morning run by the water
It’s the sunny summer days by the pool
It's the look of defeat on your opponents face after a game
It's the Sunday family barbeques
It’s playing ping pong against my brother
It's the feeling of a cold shower after sitting in the sun for hours
It’s watching the sunset with friends on BoFax ridge
It’s adventuring with dad in the mountains
It’s three day weekends
It’s taking my grandma out to Ben & Jerrys
This is my happiness.

NO STRESS, CLEAR MIN

A black crow sitting peacefully on rocks by the clear waterside
The smoky sky surrounding the sun like a swarm of bees
The algae obsessing over the rocks by the waterside
No Stress, Clear Mind
A bright sun reflecting off a pure white Savana
One after another
The ripples of the water rise onto the rocks
Then swing back into the bay
Medication for my anxiety
Time away from demanding parents
No Stress, Clear Mind

WHAT IS A GOOD POEM?

I believe that a good poem is one that can be relatable to readers but doesn’t always have to be.   A good poem pays careful attention to detail and has meaning. It also clearly displays a message to the reader.
